This guide explains what “offline” can mean, gives you the airplane-mode test step by step, lists what still needs a connection and shows how one game, our own Gloomrush, behaves without one. It belongs to our games series, which starts with what a bullet heaven game is.
What “offline” can mean
The word is used loosely in store listings, and it covers at least four different promises:
- Plays offline. After you install it, the game runs with no connection at all.
- Saves offline. Your progress is written to your phone, so closing the game and coming back later works without a connection.
- Needs a connection at first launch. The game plays offline afterwards, but opens only once while online, for example to download data or show a consent screen.
- Offline-friendly. The core game works without a connection, but some extras, such as ads, leaderboards or cloud saves, need one.
These are different, and a listing that says only “offline” does not tell you which one you get. If you travel, you want the first two at least, and you want to know whether the third applies before you board.
A two-minute airplane-mode test
You can check any game yourself, whatever its description says. Do it at home, while you still have a connection to fix things.
- Install the game while you are online. Do not open it yet.
- Turn on airplane mode. Open Settings, tap Network & internet and switch Airplane mode on, or swipe down from the top of the screen and use the Airplane mode tile. Google’s help page describes both routes.
- Check that Wi-Fi is really off. Google notes that you can connect to Wi-Fi while airplane mode is on, and that the phone remembers the choice if you enable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in airplane mode. Look at the Wi-Fi and mobile data icons, and switch Wi-Fi off if it is on. Some of the steps on that page vary by Android version.
- Open the game for the first time. This is the strictest part of the test. A game that needs to download something or accept a consent message at first launch shows it now.
- Play a few minutes. Start a run or a level, complete something and watch for error messages or spinning icons.
- Close the game fully, then reopen it. Swipe it away from your recent apps. Check that your progress is still there.
- Note what is missing. Menus that spin, buttons that are greyed out, or an ad that does not load are the parts that need a connection.
If the game passes steps four to six, it is offline in the sense that matters on a plane. If it fails at step four, turn airplane mode off, open the game once online, close it and repeat the test from step two. The game may then work offline after that one-time setup, and you will know it needs it.
The things that still need a connection
Even a game that plays offline may use the internet for something else. These are the usual ones.
| Feature | Works offline? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Playing levels or runs | Usually, if the content is on your phone | Passes the airplane-mode test |
| Saving progress on the device | Yes, if it is stored locally | Reopen the game after closing it |
| Ads | Normally not: an ad is fetched online | Whether the game shows ads, and what kind |
| Consent or privacy messages | May need a connection to load | Does one appear at first launch? |
| Sign-in and cloud save | No | Is signing in optional? |
| Leaderboards, events, friends | No | Does the game still run without them? |
| Updates | No | Update before you travel |
| In-app purchases | No | Buy anything you want before you go |
A few notes on the table:
- Ads. A rewarded ad is one you choose to watch in exchange for something in the game, such as a revive. Because you choose, a game can offer them without forcing you to watch one. An ad still needs a connection to load, so it will not appear in airplane mode.
- Consent messages. Some games ask about ads or data before showing them. That message may need a connection to load, as the consent message does in Gloomrush.
- Cloud saves. A cloud save lets your progress follow you to another phone. It is useful, and it is also the reason a game may ask you to sign in.
Offline and battery
If you will be offline for hours, battery matters more than signal. Look in the game’s settings for:
- A frame-rate option. A lower frame rate usually means less work for the phone.
- A vibration switch. Haptics use power too, and switching them off is quieter on a plane.
- Brightness and sound. These are phone settings rather than game ones, but they matter just as much.
Gloomrush, for example, offers a 30 FPS battery saver as an alternative to 60 FPS, and a Vibration setting that turns haptics off.
Offline, single-player and no-account are different things
People mix three ideas together:
- Offline means no connection needed.
- Single-player means no other players. A single-player game can still need a connection for ads, saves or sign-in.
- No account means you never sign in. A game can need no account and still use the internet for ads.
A game can be any combination of the three. For travel, offline is the one that matters. For privacy, no account does. If you also want to avoid ads, our guide to mobile games with no ads explains what “no ads” can mean in different games.
How Gloomrush behaves offline
Gloomrush is our bullet heaven roguelite, and we describe its network use plainly so you can compare it with the checklist above. Everything below comes from the game’s own page.
- The whole game works without a connection, and no account is needed. You can always play as a guest, and your progress is stored on your device. Uninstalling the game removes it.
- Ads use the internet. From version 1.0.3 the game can show optional rewarded video ads that you choose to watch, to revive after a fall or to double a run’s gold. There are no banners. A consent message about ads also uses the internet. Without a connection, the ad offers just do not appear.
- A country lookup, from version 1.0.7. When it has a connection, the game asks Mobixify for your country when it starts, in order to apply the ad rules.
- An optional cloud save, from version 1.0.7. If you choose to sign in with a Mobixify ID, your progress file can be kept in a cloud save. Without signing in, there is no cloud save.
- A battery saver. You can pick 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS, and turn vibration off.
In short, you can play the full game in airplane mode. The extras that use the internet are ads, the consent message, the country lookup and the optional cloud save. If you want a feel for what a run involves, see our tips for your first bullet heaven runs.
Questions people ask
Can you play offline games with no Wi-Fi?
Yes, if the game keeps its levels and saves on your device. Many games labelled offline still use a connection for ads, sign-in or updates, so run the airplane-mode test before you travel. Gloomrush works without a connection and without an account.
How do I know a game works offline before I download it?
The store page rarely proves it. Read the description and privacy details for words like ads, sign-in, cloud save and online, then install it and run the airplane-mode test before you rely on it. If it plays, saves and reopens in airplane mode, it is offline.
Why does an offline game show ads or ask for internet?
Ads are normally fetched from the internet, so they appear only when you are online. A game may also load a consent message, check your country or sync a cloud save. These are usually extras, and the core game keeps working without them. In airplane mode the extras simply do not appear.
Do offline games save progress?
Usually, on your device. Your progress stays when you play offline, but it can be lost if you uninstall the game or move to a new phone, unless a cloud save exists. Gloomrush stores progress on the device and offers an optional cloud save through a Mobixify ID.
Which kinds of games work best offline?
Games whose rules and content all live on your phone: puzzles, card games, and arcade or run-based games with short sessions. Games built around other players, live events or a shared world need a connection by design. Always check the individual game, not just the genre.
Before your next trip
Pick the game you plan to play, put your phone in airplane mode and play for two minutes, then close and reopen it. If it passes, you are set. If not, you found out at home rather than at thirty thousand feet.
