Scan Multiple Pages Into One PDF on Your Phone

To scan several pages into one PDF, use your phone’s built-in scanner, add each page in order, review the crop, and save the set once. If the pages end up in separate files, merge them afterwards in an app that can combine PDFs. This guide gives the steps for iPhone and Android and a way out when the pages come out split.

It follows our guide to reducing PDF size on your phone, which picks up where this one ends, and it belongs with our practical guides to documents and websites, which start with how to make a website without coding.

How the steps were prepared: they follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 and Google’s Drive Help page, and the button names are theirs. Menu names can differ on your version, so read the wording as a map, not a script.

Before you scan

A little set-up saves a lot of rescanning. The tips below are our own practical suggestions, not instructions from Apple or Google.

  • Flat page, plain surface. Scanners find the page by its edges. Apple’s guide says the iPhone captures the document when it detects the page boundaries, and Google’s Drive page shows a blue outline around the area that will be cropped. A flat page on a plain, contrasting surface gives the scanner clear edges to find.
  • Even light. Avoid a shadow from your hand or phone across the page.
  • Pages in order. Put the pages in the order you want, with staples and clips removed, before you start. Apple’s help describes reordering on iPhone, as shown below; Google’s Drive page does not describe it for Android.
  • One session. Plan to scan the whole set in one go. As you will see, that is the surest way to get one file.

On iPhone: the built-in scanner in Notes

Apple’s guide describes the scanner inside the Notes app. The steps are these.

  1. Open Notes and go to a note.
  2. Tap the button that Apple’s guide shows for adding to a note, then tap Scan Documents.
  3. Position the iPhone so that the page appears on the screen, and adjust settings such as Flash or Filters.
  4. Capture the page. In automatic capture, keep the iPhone steady, and it captures the page when it detects the boundaries. In manual capture, tap the capture button, adjust the corners as needed, then tap Retake or Keep.
  5. Scan additional pages, then finish the scan with the button the guide shows.

Apple’s guide says the document is saved as a PDF in the note. Because you added every page before saving, the result is one PDF with all the pages in the order you scanned them.

On Android: the scanner in Google Drive

Google’s Drive Help page describes scanning in the Drive app, and says to install it from the Play Store if you do not have it.

  1. Open Drive and tap the camera icon at the bottom right.
  2. Point the camera at the document. A blue outline shows the area that will be cropped.
  3. Take the photo. You can switch between Manual and Auto capture.
  4. To scan another page, tap Add, and repeat for each page.
  5. Tap Done, enter a file name or choose a suggested title, and choose .pdf or .jpg.
  6. Optionally tap Location to pick a Drive folder, then tap Save.

Choose .pdf for a single document; .jpg is the image option. Google says that .pdf scans are saved as searchable PDFs.

Add, reorder and delete pages

The two platforms treat order differently, so it is worth knowing what each page of help says.

Reorder pagesIn Preview: drag a thumbnail above or below anotherNot described on the page we read
Add pages to a PDF that already existsIn Preview: touch and hold a thumbnail and choose Scan Pages, Insert from File or Insert Blank PageNot described on the page we read

Apple’s page on PDF pages in Preview gives the iPhone details. Open a PDF in Preview, tap to show the thumbnails, and touch and hold one to see the options. To move a page, touch and hold a thumbnail until the options appear, then drag it above or below another. To scan more pages into an existing PDF, choose Scan Pages and scan the document.

On Android, the Drive page lists Retake and Delete but does not describe reordering. If the pages are in the wrong order, rescan the set in the right order before you save, and keep each scan session to one document.

Crop and rotate

A scanner crops for you, and you can correct it.

  • On iPhone, tap the thumbnail after an automatic capture and choose an option such as Adjust. After a manual capture, adjust the corners before you tap Keep. In Preview you can also rotate a page left or right, and crop a page by dragging the blue handles and tapping Crop.
  • On Android, Drive’s Crop & Rotate fixes the scan area, Filter changes colours or makes the image grayscale, and Clean erases marks such as stains and fingers.

Check every page for cut-off corners and for text near the edge before you save. A crop that clips a margin is easy to fix now and annoying to find later.

Save, name and share

Choose a name that says what the document is and which date or version it covers, such as “lease-signed-2026” rather than “Scan 3”. Some upload forms reject unusual characters, so keep to letters, numbers and hyphens.

On iPhone, the PDF lives in the note, so open it from there. In Drive, it goes to the folder you chose under Location. Check the page count and the order by scrolling through the whole file before you share it.

A scan of many pages can be large. If a form has a size limit, read our guide to reducing PDF size on your phone before you upload. If you are choosing an app for private documents, see how to read app privacy labels before you install.

If you end up with several files

It happens: you scan page by page, save each time, and finish with six PDFs. There are two ways out.

  1. Merge on iPhone. Open one PDF in Preview, show the thumbnails, touch and hold a page, choose Insert from File, and pick the next PDF or image. Apple lists Insert from File as the way to insert a PDF or image. Then use the drag step above to put pages in order, and save.
  2. Rescan as one session. On Android, Drive’s page describes adding pages only before you save, and it does not describe combining files that are already saved. The dependable fix is to scan the set again in one session with Add, then save once.

If you use a different PDF app to combine files, check what it does with your documents first. Keep the originals until the merged file is checked page by page.

A short checklist

  1. Flat, evenly lit pages on a plain surface.
  2. Scan the whole set in one session.
  3. Add every page before you save.
  4. Check crop and order on each page.
  5. Save as a PDF with a plain name.
  6. Open the saved file and scroll through it before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scan multiple pages into one PDF?
Open your phone's scanner, capture the first page, then add each further page before you save. Review the crop on each page, then save once. On iPhone, Apple's guide says to scan additional pages, then finish the scan. On Android, Google Drive's scanner has an Add button for the next page.
Where do scanned documents go on my iPhone?
If you scan in the Notes app, Apple's guide says the document is saved as a PDF in the note. If you scan in another app, it depends on that app. Open the note, or check the save location the app offers, to find the file.
Can I scan without an extra app?
On iPhone, yes: Apple's guide describes scanning inside Notes. On Android, Google describes scanning in the Google Drive app and says to install it from the Play Store if you do not have it. Other scanner apps exist, but you do not need one to start.
How do I reorder pages?
On iPhone, open the PDF in Preview, show the page thumbnails, touch and hold one, and drag it above or below another. Google's Drive scanning page does not describe reordering, so on Android the safest way is to scan the pages again in the right order before you save.
How do I make the file smaller?
Scan only the pages you need, crop closely, and check the size before you send. If it is still too big, export again with lower image quality. Our guide to reducing PDF size on your phone sets out the steps for iPhone and Android.
